Monarch Mountain Cabins is a pair of private, pet-friendly cabins in Elizabethton, Tennessee — a straightforward drive from Roan Mountain State Park and the high balds at Carvers Gap. You are not staying in the park. You are on five wooded acres with a private hot tub at each cabin, a full kitchen, and room for a dog, then you drive up to the mountain when you want the views.
A lot of “Roan Mountain cabins” are the state park cabins on TN-143. Those are a good public option if you want to sleep in the park. Ours is the private alternative: hot tub after the hike, your own grill, washer and dryer in each cabin, and no campground traffic at the door.

Private cabins vs Roan Mountain State Park cabins
Park cabins sit on the mountain highway at the base of Roan. They book through Tennessee State Parks, sleep small groups, and lean rustic — porches, wood stoves or mini-splits, depending on the unit. Pets are allowed only in designated park cabins, with park rules and fees. You are inside a busy public park.
Monarch is a short drive down in Carter County, not a substitute for waking up on the park loop. What you get instead:
- A private hot tub at each cabin
- Full kitchen, Wi‑Fi, dedicated parking
- Pets welcome with a fee (confirm the current amount and any limits on Airbnb)
- Five wooded acres, firepit, 30-foot water feature, yard games
- Cabin A for couples (sleeps up to 6 with a sofa bed); Cabin B two bedrooms, sleeps 6
- Book both cabins when two families want the same dates
If your only goal is to walk out the door onto a state-park trail, book the park. If you want a quiet night, a soak, and a real kitchen after Carvers Gap, stay here and drive up in the morning.
Roan rhododendron (usually mid-June)
The Catawba rhododendron on the Roan massif typically peaks around mid-June. Weather shifts the week. Carvers Gap parking fills on bloom weekends. Leave the cabin early, pack layers — it is cooler at 5,500–6,200 feet than in Elizabethton — and come back down for dinner and the hot tub. We are an easier last-minute hold than hoping a park cabin opens for that Saturday night.

Yes. Drive up from the cabin in the morning; most guests day-trip to Carvers Gap.
Do the cabins have a mountain view of Roan?
The property is wooded Holston / Carter County acreage, not a ridgeline lookout of Roan. The “view” is forest, the water feature, and the night sky. The balds are the morning drive.
Which cabin should we book?
