What Blue Hole Falls is
Blue Hole Falls is a local waterfall and swim-hole stop on Mill Creek, on the Holston Mountain / Stoney Creek side of Elizabethton in Carter County. Guests usually describe a short walk (often ~0.3–0.5 mile) to a series of cascades and a deep green hole. Rocks stay slick. It is not a stroller-friendly walk into the hole. Summer is the classic swim season; spring and fall are still worth a look for the falls. Watch flash-flood weather and confirm current access before you go — forest roads and trail conditions change.

How far from Monarch Mountain Cabins
From 327 Jenkins Hollow Rd, plan on about 20–30 minutes each way to the Blue Hole / Panhandle Road approach. Times are approximate. Gravel forest road, leaf season, and busy Saturday afternoons add minutes. Pair Blue Hole with Watauga Lake the same trip if you want a bigger body of water after the hole.
| Where | About from the cabins |
|---|---|
| Blue Hole Falls (trail / Mill Creek) | ~20–30 minutes |
| Downtown Elizabethton / Covered Bridge | ~10 minutes |
| Laurel Fork Falls / Dennis Cove | ~25–30 minutes |
| Roan Mountain State Park | ~35 minutes |
How to get there (driving)
The usual approach is Panhandle Road (forest road 56) in Cherokee National Forest, off the Stoney Creek / TN-91 corridor east of Elizabethton. Look for National Forest / Blue Hole signage, then follow Panhandle until pavement turns to gravel. Parking is a small trailhead / roadside pullout — it fills on hot afternoons. Do not block gates. From the parking area, the path to the hole is short but steep and rooty; wear shoes with grip.
We recommend a Google Map embed on this page (trailhead / Blue Hole Falls Elizabethton) so guests can open turn-by-turn on their phone. Directions below are orientation only — confirm the route in Google Maps or a forest-road app before you leave the cabin, especially after storms.
