A Roan Mountain cabin rental search often means one of two things: the state park cabins on TN-143, or a private cabin you use as a base for the park and the high balds. Monarch Mountain Cabins is the second option — two pet-friendly cabins in Elizabethton with a private hot tub at each unit, a full kitchen, and five wooded acres. You are not staying in Roan Mountain State Park. You drive up when you want the views, then come back to quiet woods and a soak.

Compare cabins at Our Cabins — Cabin A for couples, Cabin B two bedrooms, or book both for the same dates.

How to get to the park and Carvers Gap

Roan Mountain State Park: From Elizabethton, guests typically use US-19E toward the town of Roan Mountain, then TN-143 into the park. Follow official park / Google Maps routing for the visitor area. Park hours, trail closures, and swim-area seasons change — confirm on the Tennessee State Parks site before you go.

Carvers Gap / balds: Continue past the park corridor toward the high gap on the TN/NC line (same mountain massif). Parking at Carvers Gap fills on bloom weekends and fall color days. Leave the cabin early, pack layers — it is cooler at roughly 5,500–6,200 feet than in Elizabethton — and come back down for dinner and the hot tub.

Private cabins vs Roan Mountain State Park cabins

Park cabins sit on the mountain highway at the base of Roan. They book through Tennessee State Parks, sleep small groups, and lean rustic. Pets are allowed only in designated park cabins, with park rules and fees (commonly cited as a per-night pet fee — confirm current park policy). You are inside a busy public park.

Monarch is a short drive down in Carter County. What you get instead:

  • A private hot tub at each cabin
  • Full kitchen, Wi‑Fi, dedicated parking
  • Pets welcome with a fee (confirm the current amount and any limits on Airbnb)
  • Five wooded acres, firepit, 30-foot water feature, yard games
  • Cabin A for couples (sleeps up to 6 with a sofa bed); Cabin B two bedrooms, sleeps 6
  • Book both cabins when two families want the same dates

If your only goal is to walk out the door onto a state-park trail, book the park. If you want a quiet night, a soak, and a real kitchen after Carvers Gap, stay here and drive up in the morning. Host Brenda can answer stay questions at (908) 798-0722 or host@monarchmountaincabins.com.

Roan rhododendron (usually mid-June)

The Catawba rhododendron on the Roan massif typically peaks around mid-June. Weather shifts the week. Carvers Gap parking fills on bloom weekends. We are often an easier last-minute hold than hoping a park cabin opens for that Saturday night.

Fall color on Roan and along US-19E is the other packed season. Spring wildflowers and winter ice on the balds are quieter. For a waterfall day when the high ridge is in the clouds, see Laurel Fork / Dennis Cove notes on Our Cabins and related guides.

FAQ

Are you in Roan Mountain State Park? No. Private cabins in Elizabethton — about 35 minutes from the park and 45–50 minutes from Carvers Gap.

Can we see the rhododendron without staying in the park? Yes. Day-trip from the cabin; most guests leave early for Carvers Gap.

Do the cabins have a mountain view of Roan? The property is wooded Holston / Carter County acreage, not a ridgeline lookout of Roan. The balds are the morning drive.

Which cabin should we book? Cabin A suits couples. Cabin B is the two-bedroom for families. See both on Our Cabins.
